Is located on the top of a high hill. It served for the safekeeping of the Hungarian royal insignia between the 14th century and 1526. The castle was seriously damaged by the Turks and was never used afterwards. Now it is open to the public for visitors.
The Lower Castle is the part of the fortification system that connects the Upper Castle with the Danube. In its centre is situated the Solomon Tower, a large, hexagonal residential tower dating from the 13th century. In the 14th century, new curtain walls were built around the tower. The Tower houses exhibitions installed by the King Matthias Museum (Mátyás Király Múzeum) of Visegrád. The exhibitions present the reconstructed Gothic fountains from the Royal Palace, Renaissance sculpture in Visegrád, and the history of Visegrád. The Tower is 31 m high, five-storey tower with its 3,5-8 m thick walls was the country’s strongest construction.
The first royal house on this site was built by King Charles I of Hungary after 1325. The royal residence building is open to the public, and houses exhibitions on the history of the palace and reconstructed historical interiors.
Near Visegrád you can find numerous remains of the `limes` protecting the province of Pannonia from the 4th century. The base of the building was deltoid-shaped and the fortification was protected by towers.
The Citadel is the widest-known element of the Visegrád fortress system (water fortress, lower fortress and upper fortress). The building is erected on the top of the Castle Hill, which can be seen from the distance from every direction, and it is a popular destination for Visegrád excursions and hiking tours. The irregular-shaped fortress can be accessed through the pentagon-shaped external eastern gate tower, which is located behind the car park. The Citadel had a multifunctional role: it was protecting the valley of the Danube, it was controlling the main commerical route between Buda and Esztergom, and also served as a custom’s house. The fortress consisted of two parts. It is open for the public from 1st May to 31st October each Tuesday – Sunday between 9:00 – 16:30, from 1st November to 30th April each Tuesday – Sunday between 8:00 – 15:30.
Inside the Palace are the exhibition rooms and the stone collection. These display several records from the various ages.
The legendary General of the War for Freedom, Artúr Görgey spent his last decades in the house number 5 Fő Street.
